In Australia, a rare flesh eating bacteria is spreading across the population and doctors have no idea where it came from. It causes ulcers that can lead to the death of surrounding tissues and even can lead to amputations (see the cover picture). It could be spread by mosquitoes but its origin is still unclear. It attacks possums but whether they are carriers or victims is still unclear. The Bairnsdale Virus or buruli ulcer can eat through tissue and bone. The disease has been in Australia for decades but this outbreak is spreading more quickly than in the past. It is starting in Victoria and could move to New South Wales soon.
